[Update from VeloNews]

The AFP reported today that Belgian cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke died in a hotel room while on vacation in Senegal. He was 34.

The lanky rider, who won Liege-Bastogne-Liege among dozens of other races, reached the climax of his pro cycling career with the French team Cofidis.

After leaving cycling for a time, he often found himself at the center of media reports that alleged he suffered from alcoholism, depression, and drug abuse. He twice attempted to commit suicide.

Vandenbroucke returned to cycling on at least two occasions to race as a professional, notably in 2003 when he took second in the Tour of Flanders.
